All energy sources have some impact on our environment however the use of non-renewable energy sources such as coal, gas and oil has been proven to have a far greater detrimental effect on the environment. In addition, non-renewables are, by definition, a finite resource which will eventually run out.

It has been estimated that 7 million people die every year from the harmful effects of pollution not to mention the cost to wildlife and the natural environment.

Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels cause carbon dioxide and methane to be released into the atmosphere. These gases are credited with causing climate change which not only causes the world’s underlying weather to become warmer but also causes more erratic weather systems resulting in an increase in droughts and catastrophic flooding. This, in turn, impacts on whole ecosystems and has an adverse effect on biodiversity. Air pollution affects not only the health of the human population (especially the very young) but also the environment.

Acid rain and water pollution is another by-product of the world’s reliance on fossil fuels for power. Dangerous pollutants in the air can be absorbed into the water cycle leading to acid rain which can cause massive disruption to fragile ecosystems.

Land pollution and waste generation are also problems caused by non-renewable energy. Mining for coal, shale gas and other minerals can lead to whole areas of land being left contaminated. The mining of uranium for the nuclear industry can also lead to areas being left with dangerous levels of contamination from radioactivity. Oil spills when transporting oil by tanker can cause tremendous damage to marine wildlife and coastal areas. Indeed, oil spills from tankers such as the Exxon Valdez as well as the environmental impact of the Chernobyl disaster are all too familiar examples of this.
